Information for Potential Members

Whatever your perspective on fraternity life, we congratulate you on finding our website, and encourage you to take a look at the opportunities that Alpha Kappa Lambda has to offer. The brothers of Alpha Kappa Lambda have joined the fraternity for various reasons, and we've highlighted some of those on this page for you to consider.

Brotherhood

Brotherhood is not just a fluff term. The men of Alpha Kappa Lambda look out for each other. It's never difficult to find someone to lend a hand, or just hang out with. You can leave your doors open or unlocked, like you might in your own homes, and you find that you can trust the men you live with. The men you meet in Alpha Kappa Lambda will be friends for life.

This concept of Brotherhood makes our house feel more like a home. The chapter has a house mother, Susie, who prepares lunch and dinner during the week and organizes formal dinners. The men of Alpha Kappa Lambda have family-style lunch and dinner during the week, which is a nice contrast to the overcrowded residence hall dining facilities.

Greek Life

Joining a fraternity is a great way to meet a new people. When you join Alpha Kappa Lambda, you join a network of men nationwide, from coast-to-coast. The fraternity's National Headquarters assists with networking opportunities after graduation and it's always fun to hit the road and tailgate with brothers at another university when the Cyclones have an away game.

In addition to your own brothers, you'll have the opportunity to meet and interact with all men and women of the ISU Greek Community though several all-campus events, such as Homecoming, Veishea and Greek Week. The memories and friends you'll make as a fraternity member are ones you'll remember long after graduation.

Fraternity life, as with all of college, is what you make of it.

Academics

First and foremost, a student is on campus to gain an education. The men of Alpha Kappa Lambda recognize this, and believe that scholarship should be the top priority of its members at all times. This is demonstrated by a 2.25 GPA requirement for new members, quiet hours for enhanced study environment, and study hours reserved for studying. Upperclassman never hesitate to lend a helping hand to an underclassman in courses they have already taken. This is an opportunity you will not get in the residence halls. Members are recognized for scholastic accomplishments in a once-a-semester award dinner. The chapter may also provide financial assistance to a member who wants to pursue tutoring on-campus.

The House

Alpha Kappa Lambda has a unique housing arrangement all of its own. Each member has his own bedroom, and the opportunity to customize the rooms, even down to paint choice. Some men keep the same room throughout college, while others move around. This is unique since many fraternities share sleeping areas known as "cold airs", or have two to four men per room in a sleeping arrangement. Additionally, there is enough parking for all of our members. In larger fraternities, parking may be restricted by seniority. For the residence halls, parking is off-campus at Jack Trice Stadium. The house also has several shared areas, such as a recreation room, formal living room, 24 hour kitchen, dining room, and outdoor patio area. You can always find a game of catch or count on the grills to be fired-up on a nice day in Ames. Alpha Kappa Lambda is not just where you live when you're at Iowa State - it's your home.

Leadership Opportunities

Alpha Kappa Lambda is a moderate-sized fraternity. As such, members are offered the opportunity to gain leadership experience early-on. This allows all brothers an active role in fraternity activities. In addition, each new member class has its own leadership board. These opportunities allow you to gain invaluable experience and give you an impressive resume for pursuing scholarships during college, and job opportunities when you graduate.

Hazing

Your fraternity experience is about a positive experience and great memories. Hazing has no place among this experience. Fraternities, including Alpha Kappa Lambda, are governed at the university and national level, and have strict regulations regarding what constitutes hazing. The fraternity has a zero-tolerance stance on hazing. For a more formal and detailed explanation, please see the National Headquarters' website.

For Parents

We understand that parents play an active role in the lives of many college students. Parents often visit the chapter house throughout the school year and the fraternity will on occasion host events to which families are welcome. The men often get to know each other's families, and parents also become friends with one another. As you prepare to send your son off to school, please feel free to schedule a visit with the chapter house. Contact us if you would like to speak with parents of current members
